Students join the Department of Earth, Energy & Environment at the University of Calgary through the thesis-based M.Sc. or Ph.D. programs in Geoscience.

What you would work on

My group studies how mountain belts grow and how their sedimentary basins record that growth, combining field geology with detrital zircon geochronology, igneous petrochronology, and stable isotope geochemistry. More detail is on my research page. If you have an idea that connects to these, feel free to tell me about it.

What the work is like

Most projects involve a field season followed by lab work and data analysis. You should genuinely want to spend time in the mountains, and be prepared for fieldwork. I care more about curiosity, persistence, and care with data than about a perfect transcript.

Students in my group present at national meetings, lead their own papers, and get trained on the analytical instruments. You can see what previous students have done on my research group page.

Funding

Funded positions are available, and I will be explicit about the funding attached to any project before you apply. Students are also encouraged to apply for external awards like NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarships (for Canadian citizens and permanent residents), and internal awards at the University of Calgary.
